What is EHRM

As part of its ongoing modernization efforts, VA is launching a new electronic health record (EHR) system to store and track patient medical information, with full implementation across all VA facilities scheduled for completion by 2028. Through this effort, known as the Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) program, VA is implementing one of the most advanced EHRs in the country.

Creating a seamless health care experience

The new EHR connects VA’s medical centers and clinics with the Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. Coast Guard. A single EHR gives providers access to more complete information regarding a patient’s medical history and helps create a more seamless health care experience for service members transitioning from active duty to Veteran status. When fully implemented, the EHR will benefit over 9 million Veterans and their qualified family members, increasing their access to care and improving health outcomes.

Connecting with community care providers

VA’s new system connects with over 60,000 community care partners through a joint health information exchange (HIE) launched in partnership with DOD and the Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (FEHRM) program office in April 2020. The joint HIE allows providers to quickly and securely access patient data from participating community partners and health systems. These partners also now have their own single point of entry for accessing patient records from VA, DOD and Coast Guard when needed.

Improving appointment scheduling

The new EHR includes a tool known as the Centralized Scheduling Solution (CSS) that makes appointment scheduling more efficient at VA health care facilities. CSS replaces VA’s existing scheduling systems and eliminates the need to coordinate clinicians, rooms, equipment and calendars across multiple applications. With the tool, VA staff can identify and fill no-show appointments in real time using a single system, and Veterans will have access to a more efficient online scheduling experience.
